2009 artist note on <DMZ 비무장지대2009>

작품들 <DMZ 2009>에 대하여 2009 김혜련

나는 임진강이 보이는 마을에 산다.

차를 타고 자유로로 들어설 때면 강 건너 저편에 어렴풋이 하얀 색 건물들과 그 뒤로 나지막한 산등성이들이 보인다. 날이 맑을 때에 산의 색들은 선명해지고 저녁 즈음 지나칠 때면 하늘색이 장관이다. 강수량이 많을 때에 물결은 힘차고 풍부하게 무언가 생명줄처럼 흐른다. 비가 오거나 흐린 날에도 강은 매력적인 분위기를 풍긴다. 한강까지 이어진 강변의 철조망 뒤로 갈대숲이 무성하고 열을 지어 창공을 횡단하는 철새들의 모습을 올려다보면 강변 마을의 맑은 공기가 나를 더욱 투명하게 해 주는 것 같아 큰 행복감을 느낀다.

하지만 역사 속의 임진강은 평화로운 장소가 아니었다. 사상자의 피로 강물이 벌겋게 물들었었다던 한국전 접전의 장소, 지금도 휴전선은 이 강을 가로질러 강 주변을 온통 철조망으로 채워놓고 있다. 민통선 너머에 사람도 살고 소도 살고 콩농사도 하지만 태극기와 인공기를 마주대고 바라보고 있는 두 개의 영역은 유엔군이 주도하는 비무장지대-DMZ demilitarized zone-에 의해서 완전히 갈라져 있다. 허락 없이 넘어갈 수 없다. 목숨을 걸기 전에는.

아주 오래 전 어린 시절 고속버스를 타고 시골을 갈 때면 도로 옆 크게 파헤쳐진 산등성이에 “국토개발”이라는 글자판이 세워져 있거나 비스듬히 누워 있곤 했다. 그 간판 같은 글자체가 얼마나 컸던지 차장 밖 풍경을 압도했었다. 그런가 보다, 아무 생각 없이 지낸 시절이었다. 그리고 중년의 작가가 되어 임진강 옆 마을에 정착하게 되었다. 이 지역에도 도로 옆 에 엄청난 크기의 전광판이나 광고판들이 서 있다. 시절 따라 내용도 바뀐다. 정치나 경제적 선전내용이 주를 이룬다. 그런데 어느 날 자유로 옆 길, 더 북쪽으로 가는 길목에 DMZ 라는 글자가 광고판을 가득 채우고 있었다. 그 때 그 시절 “국토개발”처럼. 외국인을 위한 관광 상품도 있다. 통한의 철조망이 동전 망원경을 통한 단체관광 상품이 된 것이다.

내가 맑은 공기를 통해 행복감을 느끼는 이 마을 바로 옆에는 실향민들이 수없이 누워 있는 공동묘지가 있다. 죽어서라도 북쪽 고향을 보고 싶다는 그 많은 사람들, 나는 이 아이러니한 마을에서 그림을 그린다. 풍경이 풍경다울 수 없는, 주홍글씨처럼 낙인찍힌 이 풍광을 그린다. 때로는 잔잔하게 때로는 결렬하게 나의 감정을 다 실어 커다란 풍경을 그리고, 싸인을 덧붙인다, “DMZ 2009”라고. 언젠가 아 그 때는 그런 게 있었지 하고 회상을 할 날을 기다리며, 그러나 그 풍경의 아름다움은 놓칠 수 없는 애착이 되도록 정성껏 그린다. 작품 속 철조망 사이로 흘러내리는 유화물감은 어쩌면 내가 북쪽 하늘을 보면서 속으로 삭혔던 감정의 흔적일 것이다. 임진강은 내 풍경화의 원천이다. 노란강, 나의 임진강.

about my works <DMZ 2009> 2009 Heryun Kim

I live in a town overlooking Im Jin River.

Driving along the river on a long strip of road that runs to the North, I see hazy white buildings and humble ridges of mountain across the river. On a clear day, colors of the mountain turn vivid while at dusk they paint extraordinary scenery over the sky. River stream rushes along vigorously like living water. The river exudes fascinating ambience unaffected by weather. Grove of reeds lies behind barbed wires that stretch down to Han River. Gazing at the migrating birds traversing the sky and breathing in crisp air, I feel purified and joyful.

However, Im Jin River is a far cry from being a serene place in history. The river is stained with blood of the casualties from the bloodbath of Korean War. Military Demarcation Line scars across the river with barbed wires. Over the civilian control line, I see people and farmed fields. Yet, the place where South Korean flag confronts North Korean flag is completely divided by DMZ under UN authority. It cannot be crossed, until one risks its life.

In my childhood, I remember seeing a signboard with words "National Land Development” over the hills. Its sheer size overwhelmed the landscape. Then I became mid-aged artist settled in a town next to Im Jin River. Here massive signboards stand along the roadside. The contents changes but they are dominantly filled with advertisements or political campaigns. On the road further North, signboards with a word "DMZ” cluster just like "National Land Development" signs. There are souvenirs made for tourists. Through the lens of coin-operated binoculars, bitter grief of the barbed wires is marketed as a commodity for the mass tourism.

In the town where the crisp air breezes and birds traverse, I feel bliss. Ironically, in the neighboring town, there is cemetery of countless displaced people who left their home in the North. They wanted be lain closer to home facing the North. I paint landscape in this town of irony. I paint the town where its beauty cannot be glorified and its body branded with a scarlet letter. I breathe my emotions into a landscape calmly and violently. With an obsessive affection to capture the lasting beauty, I paint. Then I put up a sign “DMZ 2009.” I wait for a day when it becomes reminiscent of past. Perhaps the oil paint trickling through barbed wire might be a trace of my repressed emotions when I gaze at the Northern sky. Im Jin River is the foundation of my landscape painting. Yellow River, My Im Jin River.
