예술과 암호: 고인돌의 그림들

지난 여름 원주 토지문화관 레지던시에서 그 동안 진행했던 유물 드로잉의 자료출처들을 정리하기 시작했다. 비가 쏟아지는 날씨에도 낮에는 집중이 잘 되어 진척이 있었다. 그리고 겨울에는 고인돌과 암각화 주제로 동아시아 고고학 연구소 콜로크비움에서 작품 제작의 배경에 대해 발표를 했다.

경주는 그 자체가 문화재의 보고지만 경주를 중심으로 그 부근에 청동기와 신석기의 주요 암각화가 흩어져 있다. 경주 바로 아래 남쪽에는 울주의 천전리 암각화와 대곡리 반구대가 있는데 두 곳이 다 현재 국보이다. 중요성과 규모에 있어 이에 비교할 수는 없으나 경주 인근에는 흥미로운 암각화들이 많이 있다. 경주 내의 석장리 암각화와 안심리 고인돌, 그리고 경주 위의 포항에는 인비리의 고인돌 암각화가 있고, 포항을 지나 더 위쪽의 영일에는 칠포리 암각화가 있다. 포항에서 이제 방향을 대구 쪽으로 가다보면 도중에 영천에서 보성리 암각화를 만날 수 있다. 대구를 지나 더 직진하다보면 고령에서 장기리 암각화라는 커다란 벽면을 만나게 된다. 이제 다시 방향을 돌려 남쪽 바다를 향하다 보면 함안에 도착하여 도항리의 고인돌들을 만날 수 있는데 거기에는 현대 추상화 같은 간결하고 멋진 형상들이 가득 채워져 있다. 남해 바다를 보고 햇살을 즐기고 여수의 고인돌들을 관찰하다가 다시 파주로 돌아오기 위해 방향을 북쪽으로 향하다 보면 조금 후에 남원에서 대곡리 암각화를 만나게 된다.

암각화들은 커다란 석벽에 병풍처럼 펼쳐지는 그림들이 더 유명하지만 고인돌이라고 부르는 거석의 한 구석에 숨겨지듯 그려진 경우도 많았다. 그 커다란 돌들은 그 당시 최고 지배자들의 무덤이자 제단이자 벽화의 장소였고, 시간을 넘나들며 별들과 대화하고 싶어 했던 선사인의 세계관이 암호처럼 새겨진 책장이기도 하다. 거기, 아주 오래된, 큰 돌 위에서 나는 당대의 가장 지성적이고 가장 예민했던 사람들의 최고 걸작을 감상한다. 우리 문화의 원형이 무엇인지, 내 예술의 기원이 무엇인지, 이 많은 큰 돌들을 그 시절 어떻게 운반했는지, 유독 한반도에만 30,000 여기나 되는, 세계 어디에서도 볼 수 없는 어마어마한 고인돌의 왕국이 이 땅에 있었던 이유가 나는 정말 궁금하다.

Arts and Code : Engraved Dolmens in Korea

Last summer, I began sorting out my drawings of artifacts according to their resources, while taking up residence at the Toji Cultural Center located in Wonju, South Korea. Despite heavy rain, I could stay focused during daytime, and the sorting process went smoothly. Then, I made a presentation on the archeological background of my drawings at a colloquium on dolmens and petroglyphs, held by the Institute for East Asian Archeology last winter.

As the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom, Gyeongju is well known for its rich cultural heritage, and furthermore, the major rock engravings of the Neolithic and Bronze Ages are scattered throughout its suburbs. In Ulju, just south of Gyeongju, there are two important petroglyph sites, Cheonjeon-ri and the Bangudae Terrace in Daegok-ri, both of which are the country’s national treasures. The suburban regions have many more interesting sites of prehistoric rock art, although they are incomparable to the two national treasure sites in terms of importance and scale. I once took a field trip to these regions, visiting the petroglyphs of Seokjang-ri and the dolmens of Ansim-ri in Gyeongju. Then, I went to the neighboring city of Pohang to see the engraved dolmens in Inbi-ri, and further north to Yeong-il for the petroglyphs of Chilpo-ri. On the way from Pohang to Daegu, I also found the petroglyphs of Boseong-ri in Yeongcheon. I passed by Daegu, and continued to drive straightforward to Janggi-ri in Goryeong in order to see its petroglyphs on a huge, vertical rock face. Then, I drove the other way to the southern sea to visit the dolmens of Dohang-ri in Haman, which were fully engraved with simple and magnificent images similar to contemporary abstract art. Having enjoyed the southern sea and sunlight, I went on to Yeosu to visit its dolmens. Lastly, heading north on my way back to Paju, I stopped by Namwon to see the rock engravings in Daegok-ri as well.

Most of the famous petroglyphs are engraved on huge rock surfaces like folding screens, but I also found many enchanting ancient engravings hidden in the corner of megaliths called dolmens. The giant rocks used to be the tombs, alters or mural walls of the rulers of the time, as well as the symbolic books encrypted with codes representing the Weltanschauung of prehistoric man, who wished to transcend time and to communicate with stars in the sky. There, on the giant rock faces of ancient times, I can appreciate the masterpieces of those people who were the most intelligent and sensitive creators of the time. I truly wonder what the archetype of Korean culture is, what the origin of my art is, how they moved so many huge stones in ancient times, and finally, why the Korean Peninsula has become the unprecedented land of massive dolmens, with more than thirty thousand of them remaining until today. - (translation by Sohn Jung-In)
