<A Complete Vessel> 2014.3.3. Heryun Kim

From the very beginning, the vessel keeps water as a utensil for ancestral rites. As white, simple, and light as it can be, its size and shape remains modest. It is assumed to be made about hundred years ago. We no longer live in a period of holding the ceremony as an inevitable ritual carried by a tremendous awe toward ancestor like a hundred years ago. Rather, while many different shapes of vessel overflow nowadays, the rite has become the subject of choice depending on ones religion and the circumstance among family tradition. Thoughts having gone astray and hovering aimlessly among the will-less beings. However so momentary, we all are fragile human beings caught in this futile and insecure web of life.

Let us consider breathing: inhalation, exhalation, deep, or short. The body finds rest while inhaling, and the mind retains in piece while exhaling. Suddenly, one realizes the moment of exhalation is harder than the other, but more crucial. Then, the space bright as light seems to emerge within a body cell at last. If freedom truly exists, it would be here where it grows, and the expiration of body would not be so tragic if the eternal sleep could be this bright. Is the human mind immortal as it can be?

A Vessel of Water: water is mysterious substance. It is formless, transparent, and creates wave in its flow. The way it flows is very aesthetic. How refreshing is water when we are thirsty? Even in Genesis, water was the precondition of everything ever since the very beginning of world. (Chapter 1, verse2; the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.)

I rather say if there is any human race performing a rite with water instead of animal blood, it tends to reflect more of immortal mind. In this case, water is no longer a matter but something spiritual. With the bright light filling in every in-between of water particles, the vessel becomes a very humane condition where the utmost mind resides at last. The water seeping out of finger certainly cannot be used for the service. Just how finite our life is, the vessel is capable for holding only a certain amount. In such way, the vessel is beautiful, modestly crude and neat, leaving plenty of courage for any external transformation. A white vessel of a hundred years ago, a utensil for water, it cherishes our life while gathering and carrying the inner mind. Thus, the white ceramic remains ever anew. It is indeed, a complete vessel which carries the mind.
