Gojoseon and Hangeul

Language is composed of meanings, sounds and letters. Letters represent sounds and deliver meanings. Meaningful sounds are recorded in written letters. Ideograms represent meanings rather than sounds, while phonograms represent sounds rather than meanings. However, meanings can multiply infinitely in this world, like an infinite number of stars in the sky, like infinitely decreasing segments under a microscope, like the increasing number of inventions, and like the advancement of science or the subdivision of concepts. Then, can the number of letters increase to match that of meanings? Of course not. Human sounds are also naturally unlimited, ranging from mimicking weird animal sounds to singing a variety of tunes between the highest and the lowest notes. Meaningful sounds are selected out of innumerable voices. Like big fish caught in a net, the selected sounds become mutual promises that enable conversations. Thus, they constitute a language. Phonetic alphabets catch those sounds. It is much more efficient to draw the sounds than to draw their meanings. The number of meanings may be increased by collecting more sounds, but letters representing sounds do not need to be infinite. All that is required is a limited number of letters. Although there are countless things and meanings in the world, all you need is a standard set of letters representing vocal sounds that signify them. This is so efficient. The Korean alphabet, Hangeul, is magical in that all the letters consist of only three elements, which are straight lines, dots and circles, stacked into syllabic blocks. While horizontally arranged letters convey sounds in the Roman alphabet, the Hangeul letters are put together in invisible blocks, and thus, make sounds stand still. Amazingly, Hangeul catches voices in the air with lines, dots and circles, and locates them in blocks. The people of Joseon were the descendents of the ancient nation called Gojoseon. From ancient times, the land of Korea had been inhabited by the people gifted with a keen sense of sound. Drawing beautiful designs, such as constellation patterns, they enjoyed appreciating concise and profound symbols geometrically created by straight lines and circles in square forms.
