HERYUN KIM  - THE WAY OF PAINTING

By Dr. Gerhard Charles Rump

art critic, chief redactor of art market at DIE WELT

We are all going somewhere. Sometimes we know our destination, sometimes we do not. It has been said that the way is already the destination. Looking at the work of Heryun Kim, this saying gets a new truth. Her work is a long journey, but each completed painting is also a destiny reached. She bridges the gap between Eastern and Westen ways of pictorial thought, which adds a very distinctive, but also very delicate flavor to her paintings and drawings.

Heryun Kim does not refer explicitly to Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), but the Thomist approach to the analysis of art. Also reflected in the work of James Joyce, maybe the most important writer of the 20th century, can be applied in reference to her work, too. It is one possible approach among many, but seems, in this case, unusually appropriate.

It consists, basically, of three steps leading to CLARITAS. Art is achieved by reaching CLARITAS (i.e. “clarity”, clearness). But there has to be CONSONANTIA (“consonance”. Harmony). and ultimately QUIDDITAS, the “whatness” of a thing. The concept of clarity reached through harmony to ultimately lead to the perception of something’s “whatness” is strangely relative to Zen experience.

Heryun Kim’s work is characterized by consonant harmony, albeit outside the framework of “classical” European concepts of harmony. These have long lost their canonic value. The advent of abstract painting (introduced 1910 by Wassily Kandinsky) and twelve-tone music have widened the spectrum of aesthetics. In the absence of a dominant canon, the present-day artist has the task of permanently reconstructing him-/herself and the relations to a world which accelerates in permanent change.

Consonant harmony in Heryun Kim’s work is achieved in various ways. In her still-life painting we witness a delicate balance between the various areas of the canvas. Not only as such, but also as entities brought into consonant contact by the main figurative motif. As the main motif touches all compositorically important parts of the image. It harmonizes them. This is the realization of reconstruction, as the reconstructive function of this method of composition is the clue to the pictorial grammar.

The obvious disregard for “correct” perspective and the submission of the motif to the demands of the pictorial plane, the unavoidable generic “flatness” of true painting incorporates an element of deconstructivism. But deconstructivism cannot exist alone, Paradoxically enough, deconstructivism also constructs. Leaves something tangible and usable. Just like the deconstructivistic architecture of Daniel Libeskind leaves us, in the end, with a usable building, the deconstructivistic onset of Heryun Kim leaves us with a valid aesthetic experience and a very tangible product, a painting or drawing.

Heryun Kim’s deconstructivistic approach is not aimed at the “picture” as such, rather at traditional ways of representation, including modernism. Therefore, traditional means of analysis still function very well. This is only one biological background, our organs of perception including the processing of visual information in the brain. This cannot be deconstructed. But habits of seeing very well can.

In this “abstract” line paintings, often inspired by looking at the branches and the twigs of trees, harmony is achieved by the dynamic equilibrium of parts enclosed and opened, in combination with the linear element’s evocation of the important role of the edges of the canvas. In the end, this leads to the reflection of the image as an entity on the one side, and as a clipping from infinity on the other. Sam Francis has tried to emphasize this in many of his paintings, but did so by leaving the center void. With Heryun Kim, the same is achieved in a way which activates the image as a whole.

The landscapes then show a different approach. Here harmony, as far as pictorial form is concerned, is achieved by parallelization. Mainly three broad stripes runs horizontally, almost like in a flag. Their correspondence undergoes a variation in the colouring, which often strikes unusual chords. But the application of color is not executed in the Poussin’s manner of local colour within a basically linear element. The area the colour is spread on is totally congruent with the form, even where it is blurred-both parts constitute each other. Line, if at all, is only perceived as a virtual boundary between what is pure painting.

An important part is played by sometimes linear, sometimes painterly elements in the landscapes (which very often ware seascapes, if you will). Referring, by way of motif, to walks and piers, they take the position of what, in other imaging, is called a “distractor”-A distractor’ function is at least twofold. One of its task is to attract attention for itself, thus distracting it from the rest of the picture.

But it cannot stand alone. So the second function is to open a contrasting gap between itself and the rest of the picture, which leads to a more complete experience of the whole. It is thus a dependent element of the composition, as it cannot stand on its own. Whereas, for instance, the blue band denoting “sky” could very well be the sole element of a painting, it is an independent element.

Subtly construction an effective pictorial syntax, Heryun Kim tells tales of what images can be, should be or are likely to be, how they affect our visual experience and what their noetic implications are. This is so because there is not only a more than everyday consonance, but also clarity.

The clarity is a function of the the complete makeup of the image the paintings present. It is a clarity of the few opposed to the clarity of the many like one encounters in the drippings of Jackson Pollock. The relations between the parts are not obscured by visual diversions, the focusing is sharp.

There is, of course, painterly treatment of colour, but this, again, is managed in the same way. By concentrating on the elements and their relations which are “core” ones, indispensable and necessary ones, by concentrating on the representation of what things are and how they can be represented in a focused way, Heryun Kim achieves this quality of QUIDDATAS of “whatness”. She shows what is, not what could also be. 15th and 16th century Persian miniatures, like the illustrations for the Shah nameh made for Shah Thamasp, go about it completely the other way. They construct an image of reality by representing detailed systematic schemes of signs. A different way to come to whatness. And sometimes a completely different one. But here, we find an uncommon spirit of purity, much akin to what has in early modernism been termed the “spiritual” in art.

This spiritual element has a two-sided nature. It is “spiritual” in the sense of original German term “geistig” meaning relative to erudition, thought, and mind. And it is also spiritual in the meditative sense, which approaches Heryun Kim’s work to that of artists like Mark Rothko, despite all obvious differences.

The drawings are even more reduced. Some of them show themselves as being extremely relational in the formal sense, subtly stressing the different possibilities of aesthetic experience by posing the “motif” or “figuration” on to the paper in such a way, that two or more different experiences of distance to the edges are possible. Distance, closeness, contact, transition are the underlying concepts, which can all come together in one drawing. This is a way of concentrating aesthetic expression which is uncommon both in Eastern and in Western. Not that these things have not been tried out before, but here we find a genuine redefinition and reconstruction of such settings.

And therefore Heryun Kim’s work is an important statement of “pictoriality”, the essence of what any image is.

이 작가는 사물의 ‘무엇일 수 있음 (what it can also be)’ 이 아닌 ‘무엇임 (what is)’ 자체를 보여주고 있는 것이다.

그런 즉, 김혜련의 작품은 어떤 형상인 것의 진수(眞髓) (essence of what any image is) 곧 ‘회화성(pictoriality)’ 에 대한 하나의 중대한 선언문이다.
