Advanced Symbolism and Poetic Materiality

Yoon, Woohak | Art Critic

The inevitable task of modern painting is to create a new coexistence, under the name of

painting, between two-dimensionality as self-awareness of the medium and the image of the subject, with which it has shared a long historical relationship.

Indeed, it is a kind of contradiction and incompatibility in itself that flatness and the

image of the subject bring each other into existence and coexistence in one place, in a relationship of conflicting positions. In order for the painting as a flat surface to ensure its flatness, it must avoid images of three-dimensional objects, and the method of resolving this is one of escaping threedimensionality through abstract images. And the only way to preserve the image of the subject and maintain the characteristic epistemological attraction of the painting medium is to destroy the  mediums flatness and pursue three-dimensionality. In a word, the intractable task placed before modern painting is to gather in one place the two incompatible courses of pursuing flatness and pursuing three-dimensionality.

The core of the meaning for being in the history of modern painting has actually been

in the deepening of these two courses. For example, one strand of logic has been the course of modernity traveled vigorously since the Renaissance, one of plausibly disguising images of subjects to simulate three-dimensionality on the surface of the canvas, reaching the extreme of disguise with the sudden emergence of photographic technology for capturing images. Another rival logic has recognized that at such an extreme of disguise, the existence of painting would inevitably decline into a mere instrument of the subject, and it has thus taken the route of pursuing an autonomous order of abstract painting, emphasizing the artists own two-dimensional originality.

The search for possibilities of coexistence between these two aspects has therefore arisen

as a new task for painting in recent years, and this also has elements that follow along the same track as perspective within modern art of the so-called restoration of picturality.

The works of the painter Heryun Kim must be observed carefully within this vein, as

they represent one course within the process of conflict and concern at the very center of this new task. Indeed, if one examines the causes behind the current state of modern art--slightly enervated and lacking a center--and attributes it to a development that has lost any sense of conflict or problematization and is centered on technique, or else to a bias toward elements intended to exploit certain subject matter, Kims work could be said to occupy a very important strand of ontology as painting.

In fact, the images that appear in her paintings are not all images that stress the threedimensionality of the subject, nor are they all images of simple post-representational expression. Instead, they are concrete images that encircle a conceptual aspect, and their codes for transmitting image have a highly multiplex aspect. In particular, within the process of enriching the image, a new situation is shown of images peculiarly existing within a distinctive figurative space, overcoming both the physical two-dimensionality of the painting surface and the three-dimensionality of the visual illusion space. And at this point, color as the visual essence of painting does not remain as either a means of awareness or a simple object of experience and intuition but is the kind of thing that shows the rhythm of existence in a series of neutral and blended dimensions.

This means that the presence of the images on her canvases represents neither a

representative dimension nor a dimension of physical and fleshy two-dimensional objets. Thus, the colors that appear in her paintings show a twofold order in which the presences of pigments clash inevitably within the conditions of the flat surface of the canvas--an image of predestined conflict within the interplay of the non-material dimension of color and the material dimension of the thickness that appears as the physical overlapping of time. And this conflict draws her paintings into a new level of analysis, transforming them into deeper and more meaningful works, since one could view this as the paintings tossing out a new fusionist thread in modern painting within the odd neutrality where color is matter and matter is color.

As a result, the images of various objects that appear on her canvas (including ferry boats,

fruit, shoes and urns) are characterized by the way that they do not get tied up in representation of certain objects but lead us instead to experience images that are not only universal but also conceptual. For example, the ferry boats on her canvas are not representations of specific boats, nor are they abstract images that depart from the image of a ferry boat. They are creative images born anew with color on the canvas, paintings of an open dimension capable of drawing the image inside from various angles. The boat could be a boat crossing the sea of life, or a symbol for a solitary being, isolated and undulating on the sea of life. This is the birth of a peculiar poetic image that is far more narrative and yet not at all representational, and thus it preserves the physicality of the pigments even more. And this birth of the poetic image could be seen as the result of the artists characteristically delicate and sharp (to an extent that could be called excessive from an everyday standpoint) sensibility arriving profoundly at a formative layer of color, which could itself be called the

result of properly capturing the characteristic weight and multi-layered quality of oil painting. Thus, Kims paintings exist not only as good examples of the extent to which color can metamorphose within the traditional format of the medium but also a perspective of confirmation, teaching us of the greatest common visual measure of oil painting.

Kims paintings are works in which a boat is clearly recognized as a boat, and fruit as

fruit, but they do not remain as their original forms and images, instead translated into a pictorial language within active brush strokes that blend together the artists body and soul, newly splintering and fluttering. The paintings thus guide and tune the viewer to meet once again with the images inherent image within the traditional format of painting. And because these paintings communicate unified images within diversity, they increase the density and tension on the canvas, creating a poetic language out of the paintings content with an extreme richness. In a word, while a poorly painted work becomes noisy with the narrative nature of the object, Kims works are characterized by the way in which they form canvases that are instead quiet and subdued, and thus more poetically condensed.

In a critique of Kims work a few years back, I used the terms nomadism of the pigment

and the peculiar coexistence of color and materiality, and these assessments remain valid even now. Actually, I would now say that the artist is standing in the midst of a process in which this assessment is raising its level even further. In fact, if one bears in mind that the artistic world claimed by Kim is the result of investing not only a tremendous amount of practice on the canvas but also a high level of skill and sensitivity in the act of creation leading up to such moments, one can see that this world is not at all something of a simple dimension.

Of course, there is indeed the danger that if this world of skill and density should become

emphasized simply in an excessively technical way, and the neutral balance binding it from inside should come crumbling down, it could paradoxically give rise to more narrativity and bring about a series of overload phenomena. But this presence of danger is also, paradoxically enough, an aspect that bespeaks the inherent tension possessed by her world and the existential characteristics possessed by her paintings.
