We are living in an age that began with the end of the last glacial period. What was human life like in the harsh cold of the ice age? We tend to imagine primeval man wearing animal skins and hunting with spears, but is that enough to understand who they were? The Holocene is the current geological epoch which began approximately 10,000 years ago, coinciding with the beginning of the Neolithic Era. In the Pleistocene Epoch that preceded the Holocene, the Korean Peninsula was connected by land to the Japanese Islands, while Siberia was connected by land to Alaska. Pleistocene humans knew how to make stone tools, and moreover, buried their family members and friends, which proved the fact that they were spiritual beings capable of feeling sympathy, pity, a sense of loss and yearnings. Having originated in Africa, modern humans went wandering across Eurasia, crossed the Bering Strait and finally reached America. Homo sapiens were not only the inventors of practical tools, but also aesthetic beings who understood symbols and abstraction, and responded to lines, shapes and colors. One can find numerous splendid images on those petroglyphs which have been discovered either in South American primeval forests or in the native American rock art sites of New Mexico. Likewise, one can find many brilliant images on the petroglyphs of Bangudae in Ulsan, South Korea.
Today, we call those very long periods of time by simple names, such as the Old Stone Age, the New Stone Age and the Bronze Age. Still, the artistic talents of prehistoric humans were indeed extraordinary and overwhelming. Without any teacher or textbook, they kept engraving a variety of images, such as whales, deer, turtles and mystic characters, on huge rock faces. For example, the W-shape of the constellation Cassiopeia has been observed on ancient earthenware vessels discovered throughout Eurasia, including Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. The same shape is also hidden in the large petroglyphs of Bangudae in Ulsan. Furthermore, Cassiopeia opposite the seven stars of Ursa Major is engraved on a stone coffin lid from the Goryeo Dynasty collected by the National Museum of Korea, and is also vividly painted on the ancient tomb mural of the Goguryeo Dynasty located in Deokheung-ri, North Korea. It is uncertain whether the W-shaped image of the Bangudae petroglyphs actually represented the constellation Cassiopeia or not. It seems to be true, however, that this simple, powerful and repetitive image looks dignified, as if it were the timetable of stars moving in the sky at night.
